About

This was just a sliver of my closet as of September 2014. I can only pick out three things here that I still own today.

This was just a sliver of my closet as of September 2014. I can only pick out three things here that I still own today.

A shopaholic to the core, I realized that 2015 was the year I needed to make a change. I was wracking up debt for things I didn’t need and that weren’t bringing usefulness or happiness to my daily life. I decided to document my journey (even if it’s just for myself) in trying to make positive changes in my life. By April 2016, I plan to be free from my consumer debts, which currently amount to over $5,000. After that, I plan to dive headfirst into paying off my student loans of over $7,500.

Two things have inspired my decision to make a change. The first is discovering minimalism. The community of like-minded individuals have inspired me to give up my bad spending habits and to let go of items that clutter my life and my home. The personal finance community gave me a wake-up call. After reading many stories and journeys of how people just like myself got out of debt (and stayed out) I knew I needed to do the same for myself.

For me, minimalism and financial peace go hand-in-hand, and I need to talk about both. My debts are partially caused by my own need to buy, buy, buy (n’sync, anyone?). If I can curb that habit by only bringing items into my home and life that serve a purpose, I can get a better handle on my financial situation.

Lastly, this blog is anonymous. I chose this so that I can be completely up front and open about the numbers of my financial situation. It’s not exactly a secret, I mean, the banks all know! But my family and friends don’t, and I’m not quite ready to tell them. This may change later, but for now, just call me KR.
